Josh Hamner came away from the season-opening ASA Southeast Asphalt Tour's doubleheader weekends with finishes of ninth and twelfth at Mobile International Speedway (AL) and Five Flags Speedway (FL) respectively.
Saturday night's race at Mobile ended up being just a little bit long for Hamner's liking. He was a contender through the event, but finished in the back half of the top ten.
“We maybe got a little too aggressive with things,” said Hamner. “If it had been a 100-lap race, we would have been alright. I think we ran something like 175 laps here tonight with the cautions. All those heat cycles on the tires just caused our car to give up. I am pretty happy to
come over here and qualify second and dominate the race like we did I am good with that because we don't race here much.”
Hamner brought the same car to Five Flags Speedway (FL) the next day and broke the track record in qualifying for the Pro Late Models series.
“That's cool that we have the track record for ASA SAT,” said Hamner. “I like going fast.”
But the tricks that worked for qualifying didn't pan out for the race itself.
“This is not a motor racetrack,” explained Hamner. “I thought I could make it a motor track. We had struggled in the past on our qualifying package, we worked on that and we need to de-tune it a little but to make it go better on the long run. That Hamner sealed motor in there is a pretty good combination no matter where you take it.”
Josh Hamner will return to action on Friday, April 10th at the Five Flags Speedway in Pensacola, Florida for the opening round of the Blizzard Super Late Model Series. Hamner was the Blizzard champion at Five Flags one year ago and he looks to defend his title.
