The 2009 season has been full of new challenges for Josh Hamner. The Alabama driver has ventured into new waters with a full schedule of racing with the ASA Late Model Challenge Series. This has taken Hamner all across the county to race at unfamiliar venues like Rockingham Speedway (NC), the site of his most recent race. On Saturday at Rockingham, Hamner qualified fifth and finished 10th in the Cherry Bomb 200 event.
“We were good, but we just need to do some testing,” said Hamner with a smile after the race. “I have never laid eyes on this place (Rockingham) other then by playing a Playstation and by watching television. We qualified fifth and ran in the top ten all day. That is definitely not what we wanted, but hey it could have been worse.”
Hamner’s crew worked on the car and made some gains during the race. In the end, the car would tighten up dramatically after short runs. Hamner would then lose all the positions that he had gained.
Though the season is still young, Hamner is already starting to enjoy his time in the ASA Late Models.
“It is a lot of fun,” added Hamner. “The finishes are not there yet. I am a racer. I expect to win everything. When we don’t run strong we get motivated. This gives me that extra drive when I get back to the shop to work harder.”
Hamner will return to action with the ASA Challenge Series on Saturday, July 18th at Salem Speedway in Salem, Indiana.
